Eden in Ibiza Details...
Eden Nightclub,
Calle Salvador Espriu, San Antonio, 07820, Ibiza
Back in the murky 90s a venue called
the Star Club morphed into Kaos and then just as swiftly became
the present day Eden in the winter of '99/2000.
Eden appropriated the symbol of the competition directly
across - Es Paradis's apple - and a feud was born. The constant
bickering keeps them on their toes however as both vie for
the custom that pours in from the West End and the other drinking
zones of San Antonio and its surrounds.
Judge Jules was a consultant in the design of the dj booth
and the Radio 1 jock also occupies the club on Sundays for
Eden's most high profile night.
Location
Directly on the waterfront of San Antonio, opposite the harbour.
Perfect for town-based clubbing. If you are staying down the
Bay (Port d'es Torrent), the disco bus ferries clubbers back
and forth all night.
Music Policy
2008 should see a breakthrough year for Eden, who have previously
failed to develop a solid line up. Along with Judge Jules
on Sundays, Dave Pearce holds a weekly spot on Tuesday to
keep the anthemic trance fans happy.
Yet another Radio 1 favourite, Pete Tong, moves to Eden this
summer bringing a quality house night to San An, including
a weekly residency of Groove Armada.
Funky house is can be found at Garlands, Twice As Nice offer
some urban grooves, while Koolwaters supply the breaks.
Try the back room on any night for alternative sounds. Electric
Sex's gigs are the pick of the bunch.
Inside Eden
2008 has seen a huge development inside Eden, updating and
improving the club to meet the decent club standards of Ibiza.
The sound system is powerful, the lighting effects are reasonably
good and there are plenty of bars to service the approximately
5,000 that can be accommodated inside.
Downstairs the dancefloor is separated into two sunken areas
with the booth overlooking both. A stage at the far end can
also be utilised should Girls Aloud or other such pop groups
drop by. In the rear of the club is the glassed back room
with capacity for a few hundred.
Upstairs is the restricted access VIP area complete with
couches and more bars which overlooks the rest of the club.
The design is stark and slightly cold.
DJ Mag Club Review...
Up until this time last year, admitting you were going to
Eden would have got you laughed out of DC10. That was until
the most powerful man in dance music stepped in, announced
he was taking Wonderland to the venue and called in just about
every friend and favour to pull out the most surprising line-ups
of last summer.
That man, of course, was Pete Tong and it was through his
gravitas that names like Timo Maas, Nic Fanciulli, James Zabiela
and Eric Prydz were lured to the San An market for the first
time.
If only to see what all the fuss was about, Eden was suddenly
the place to go but for each newcomer the reaction was the
same. Much like Space on a Sunday, Wonderland was big room
Ibizan clubbing at its most high octane with ecstatic cheers
commonplace and a soundtrack based on quality underground
beats.
"Dancefloor-wise, Wonderland has more in common with
Space or Amnesia than Pacha - it's more of a rave," explains
Pete. "The music is often underground, rolling and heads-down,
which isn't what people used to associate with Eden. Every
DJ that played was blown away by the energy and the crowd's
were strong each week."
Of course, to put Eden's changing fortunes down to Tong's
magic wand alone would be unfair. The product of bold vision
and colossal investment, when Eden was refitted last summer
it was a job that would have cleaned out a lottery winner
with a state-of-the-art LED lighting rig, a new outdoor terrace
and a digital Martyn Audio system. In short, the place is
a beast.
It would also be churlish to ignore the place of Judge Jules's
Judgement Sundays in any discussion of Eden. Celebrating its
10th anniversary this year, it might be as subtle and fashionable
as one of the T-shirts in Julesy's 'Fashions & Villains'
line but the trance institution is still one of the busiest
and wild parties on the island.
