| DJ Sets ::King Unique (MATTHEW ROBERTS
& MATT THOMAS)
King Unique is the duo of Matthew Roberts,
ex-Cream resident, life-long DJ and prolific remixer, and
the new noise on the block Matt "Watkins" Thomas,
the studio junky behind Mainframe and Watkins. The two long-standing
collaborators decided to join forces full-time at the start
of 2000 and make some 21st century noise, choosing Junior
records as the obvious home for their new sound. The result
has been a series of diverse club tracks and remixes mixing
funky and proggy house elements, tied together with head twisting
production. Pete Tong's recent choice of the King Unique remix
of Mutiny's 'The Virus' for Essential New Tune (on the same
show he also played three of their other records...) sealed
their reputation as innovative peak-time club producers, and
a subsequent Essential Mix confirmed they are back with a
bang.
Their two-man DJ shows blend the best elements of a classic
DJ set with all the latest studio gadgets and exclusive CD
edits of tracks. Matthew R spins the vinyl and CDs while Matt
T brings computers, samplers and FX to the mix, giving the
raw sound and excitement usually associated with the likes
of Underworld and the Chemical Brothers. These sets have worked
to devastating effect at Cream, earning them repeat bookings
and attracting more gigs at 'Lush' in Ireland and Steve Lawler's
'Session' night at Code.
Record wise King Unique are set to be everywhere this summer.
Their debut release for Junior, 'Dirty' looks set to be absolutely
massive. Matt T is the man behind the massive 'Black a.m'
by Watkins (coming soon on Sony/Shaboom and sounding massive
on the terrace at Space with Tongy) and also behind the storming
Mainframe project on Fuju. Matthew R is the man behind UBU
'Pixels' signed for the first release on Dave Piccioni's first
new venture since Azuli, Anodyne. They've got massive support
from the likes of Danny Tenaglia and Deep Dish on everything
that they do and are fiercely proud of their status as the
men who got Steve Lawler to play Madison Avenue in Code.
