Pilgrim - One of the most original, hard
working DJ's there is on the old skool scene at present is
one of the original DJ's from the very beginning when it all
first started. "I've been DJ'ing since 1987 when back
then, I was a hip-hop scratch DJ using 2 copies of the same
record to do loads of trick stuff like using my nose, knees
or elbows to work the cross fader and generally scratching
the records up beyond recognition. After a while the music
in hip-hop started to change to slow gangster rap whilst at
the same time the rave scene started to grow. As I got more
used to the rave sound, I liked what I heard as the music
was uplifting, energetic and everyone into the music seemed
so happy, which is what hip-hop used to have so at that point,
that's when I started switched over to what is now known as
hardcore."
Pilgrim's major break into the hardcore
scene came in 1991 when he landed a residency at Quest in
Wolverhampton, voted the number 1 club night in the whole
of the country by the ravers choice, and from the back of
that became a household name playing at the countries top
all-nighters such as Fantazia, Vision, Amnesia House, Tribal
Gathering, and club venues all over the country, still keeping
his unique style of using 2 copies of the same record and
playing them both at the same time to make the track sound
like a remix.
"About the back end of 94, the music style changed and
split into happy hardcore and drum and bass so I decided to
stick with the happier side of hardcore but after a while
the music went silly as it seemed to be speeded up rip off
versions of all the old classics and then came all the chipmunks
and the silly cartoon themes, so I kind of lost interest in
the whole thing and took a back seat from it all until about
1998 when I started playing out more sets of the old original
tunes from back in 91. Not long after that I hooked up with
the guys from Flashback as they too, were ex old skool ravers,
and started to put on small parties totally dedicated to the
old skool sound." Since then the old skool scene has
once again become massive with all-nighters and club nights
all over the country dedicated to the music and once again,
Pilgrim can be seen spinning the old classics at most of them.
