Colours Review...
A year has passed since I last reviewed
Colours at the Liquid Rooms, and it was time for the MOT.
This time Sander Kleinenberg and Seb Fontaine stepped up to
the decks, and with a little help from Radio 1, our shouts
could be heard in London.
The Liquid Rooms hasn't changed much since I was last there,
and nor need it. Plenty of seats, a quick bar, a good sound
system, and a small but sufficient chill out room. An extra
effort had been made on the décor for the night, with
atmospheric UV lighting up a host of decorations that took
your attention straight to the overlooking DJ. They had also
included a marquee tent out the back to let you get some air
and take a break from the music. A second cloakroom had been
included, but it was 'full' by half eleven, or in truth neither
of the two people staffing it could be bothered to make the
journey for more coat hangers. The only other let-down was
the volume. I had ear plugs in to protect my abused ear drums,
and it still sounded very loud.
But the reason we came to the club on the night was for the
music, and there were some treats in store. Sander Kleinenberg
was standing in for Junkie XL, who's equipment had been stolen,
but few were upset with this. Savers kicked off the night
followed by Jon Mancini, who played the club out till 1am.
He did himself justice in a thoroughly enjoyable house set
that got us all up onto the dance floor. When the big hand
was at 12, and the little one at 2, Sander Kleinenberg came
onto the decks and really gave the club something to shout
about. The mixing, music, and atmosphere were all brought
out by this top class DJ. Grins a plenty, the only difficulty
in getting a seat at the side now was getting through the
packed dance floor.
Seb Fontaine came on at 2:45, a bit of a disappointment,
because I would have listened to Sander the rest of the night
without complaint. Seb played a varied set that was designed
for radio, with a bit of techno, house, trance, and progressive
blended together. I like them all, so couldn't complain. His
mixing was good, but he let the basic's go once or twice with
the beats slipping apart. The last half hour was better, and
he kept the crowd happy by playing on after he went off air.
All in all this was a good night, I love the club, and with
a top atmosphere and a combination of good to brilliant mixing
we all left with our ears ringing.
