“This is how trance is meant to
be: beautiful bosh that takes you to another place”
Mixmag feature February 2003.
A lot can happen in 12 months, for Jon O’Bir, 2002
started off with him mixing in his bedroom like thousands
of others dreaming of the big time, but as the hours counted
down to 2003 his dream had come true and he was warming up
the Godskitchen crowd for Fergie.
It all started back in September 2002, when he entered along
with 300 other hopeful djs, the PaSSion and M8 magazine competition
and won. He was then offered the chance to play for Motion
in Derby and also to show off his talents on the Internet
radio station, bpm. With his style of progressive/uplifting
trance and expertly blended mixes, he was soon noticed by
Godskitchen, who were looking for a new young DJ to offer
a residency and the prospect of fledging career as Britain's
next DJ sensation.
"It is quite literally unbelievable, I’ve loved
mixing since I brought my first set of decks two years ago
and now I get to do it in clubs all over the country to thousands
of people"
When Fergie heard all the interest in Jon he asked him to
join him on his Radio 1 show. His half hour set, live all
around the world went down a storm and Fergie was astounded
by his support via emails and message boards and envisaged
big things for Jon. Fergie has been right behind Jon and included
him in his ‘Fergies Fledglings’ feature on his
radio 1 website. Jon has also been given the opportunity to
flex his mixing muscle with an exclusive mix for Judge Jule’s
international radio show.
Jon is one of the leading djs at the moment whom is carving
the new face of the trance genre. One of the key aspects that
differentiates Jon from many of the other DJs in the trance
genre is Jon’s efforts to incorporate upfront trance
productions by unsigned producers.
In terms of his own productions, Jon’s first collaboration
with similarly impressive upstart Gareth Emery (GTR) in the
form of ‘Escapade’ proved a success and found
flavor with the likes of PVD. Jon has recently been back in
the studio with Emery recording the follow up ‘Bouncebackability’,
which is set for release in early 2005.
2004 has been an immense success for Jon, continuing to impress
the Gods faithful with the residency at Godskitchen, and developing
an army of new followers at every club he plays. Domestically
he has played at every major club you could care to mention,
whilst this year has proved his first (and well received)
opportunity into pushing his sound on the international scene.
Touching down at destinations in Cyprus, Hong Kong, Canada,
Greece to name but a few. Jon will soon have the opportunity
to bring in the New Year; playing the midnight set in New
York before Trance maestro Paul Van Dyk takes to the decks,
the perfect way to end of fantastic year! Bring 2005 on!
